“Alternative warm-ups II (3b)” from James Stamp’s Warm-ups and Studies for Trumpet is extended here to three octaves. The 2-octave version of this warm-up increases the pliability of the embouchure muscles. If the range is too difficult, follow Stamp’s logic and expand into it one partial at a time. This exercise should leave the lips feeling loose like they have just been massaged.
Adding the pedal octave extends the drill into the extreme pedal range. Navigating the break between the false pedals below C3 and the extreme pedals is difficult. This drill is a great way to increase facility with the pedal break, which pays dividends in contemporary repertoire.
